Start with Arnolds Park and the lake
Make Arnolds Park Amusement Park the anchor, because it gives first-timers the classic lakes feel right away: rides, the boardwalk area, the beach, and the Queen II all sit close together at 37 Lake Street. On Friday, July 17, 2026, the official park calendar shows rides scheduled from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., leaving room for breaks.
If you have younger kids, check height rules before promising a specific ride. The park lists several restrictions, including a 48-inch minimum for the Legend Coaster. Wheelchairs and strollers are available for daily rental, but supplies are limited.
Take the Queen II, then leave space
The Queen II gets everyone onto West Lake Okoboji without needing to rent a boat or assign a driver. The official 2026 Queen II schedule shows Friday, July 17 and Saturday, July 18 with 1, 3, 5, and 7 p.m. cruises. Aim for 1 p.m. on Friday, then keep 3 p.m. as your backup if lunch, parking, or weather slows you down.
After the cruise, do not rush straight to the next thing. Use the late afternoon for the beach area, shops, arcade games, or just shade and water.
Dinner at The Okoboji Store
For dinner, drive a few minutes north to The Okoboji Store at 1404 Highway 71. It fits this itinerary because it is casual, on the water, and built for groups that may include kids. Its official site lists Thursday-Monday hours opening at 11 a.m., with the kitchen open until 11 p.m.
If everyone still has energy, return toward Arnolds Park for sunset near the lakefront. If the group is cooked, call it a win and head to the hotel.
Stay close at The Inn Hotel
The Inn Hotel works as the overnight stop because it is in Arnolds Park, close to the first day’s anchor, and its official site lists the address as 15 Dam Road. The hotel says it is open year-round and lists Wi-Fi, morning coffee, and a seasonal outdoor pool. Rates change quickly in summer, so book early and verify cancellation rules.
Slow down Saturday at Kenue Park
On Saturday morning, drive about 10 minutes to Dickinson County Nature Center at 22785 Nature Center Road in Okoboji. This stop gives the weekend a second speed. The nature center is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with free admission and public programming listed by the county conservation board.
Inside, families can use the children’s exhibits and nature store. Outside, Kenue Park adds prairie trails, paved trail connections, restrooms, disc golf, and a nature playscape. Spend 90 minutes to two hours.
Map and driving order
Use this order: Arnolds Park Amusement Park and Queen II at 37 Lake Street, The Okoboji Store at 1404 Highway 71, The Inn Hotel at 15 Dam Road, then Dickinson County Nature Center and Kenue Park at 22785 Nature Center Road. The longest local hop is roughly 10 minutes in normal traffic.
Before you go
- Confirm the park and Queen II calendars, because Arnolds Park notes that dates and times can change.
- Buy ride and cruise tickets ahead for popular summer weekends.
- Pack sun protection, refillable water, and a light layer for the boat. Follow crew instructions and posted lake and beach rules.
- If weather pauses the rides or cruise, move the nature center to Friday afternoon and save the open lakefront time for Saturday.
- For a Saturday-Sunday trip, replace the nature center with a lake walk or another open Sunday stop, since the nature center is not listed as open Sundays.
Make it your own
Travelers who prefer a slower first day can skip the ride pass, spend more time on the Queen II and lakefront, and keep dinner early. Families with young children can shorten the nature trails on Saturday and focus on the indoor exhibits and nature playscape.
