This schedule works on a Thursday in any season. In summer, the Walcott museum adds Monday and Tuesday hours, but outside Memorial Day through Labor Day it is closed those two days.
Stop 1: Meet the trucks that moved America
Start at the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum, 505 Sterling Drive in Walcott. It is near the famous Iowa 80 Truckstop, but the museum is a separate nonprofit attraction with its own entrance and hours. That distinction matters: you are stopping for transportation history, not simply wandering a busy travel center.
The collection gives younger visitors big machinery to inspect while adults can follow changes in highway travel. Admission is free, and donations are appreciated. The museum is open 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and noon–5 p.m. Sunday outside the summer season; from Memorial Day through Labor Day, it opens at 9 a.m. Monday through Saturday and noon Sunday. The neighboring truck stop reports 20 pull-through RV spaces and allows RVs to use its truck-parking area when those spaces are full, making Walcott the most practical large-vehicle stop on this route.
Stop 2: Pause where Walcott gathers
Drive a few minutes into town for Walcott Commons at 1116 E. Bryant Street. Open 6 a.m.–4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, this cafe and bakery fits the route without forcing a long detour or a rushed meal. Its role here is simple: give everyone a comfortable reset before the longer eastbound leg.
The cafe serves breakfast and lunch as well as baked goods and drinks. Because menus can change, choose after you arrive rather than planning the day around one item. If your vehicle is unusually large, call ahead about parking or leave it at an appropriate legal space near the interstate and adjust your plan.
Stop 3: Trade the highway for river stories
Continue east to the Buffalo Bill Museum, 199 Front Street in LeClaire. Despite the name, the museum reaches beyond William F. Cody. Its collections connect the town to Mississippi River pilots and include the Lone Star, a preserved wooden-hulled sternwheeler housed beside the museum.
Regular hours are 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Saturday, and noon–5 p.m. Sunday. Admission listed in July 2026 was $7 for adults ages 13–64, $5 for seniors, $2 for ages 4–12, and free for children 3 and younger and active military members. No regular reservation is listed.
Finish at the city’s riverfront and pavilion, 107 S. Front Street, just south of the museum. This is an easy final stretch rather than another major attraction: watch the Mississippi, notice the working river, and let restless travelers move before returning to the car.
Map and driving order
The route runs east with little backtracking: Iowa 80 Trucking Museum → Walcott Commons → Buffalo Bill Museum → LeClaire Riverfront. Use this ordered driving map and check live traffic before leaving Walcott.
Before you go
- Check both museums’ current hours, especially around holidays and the Walcott Truckers Jamboree.
- Use Iowa 511 for construction or severe-weather conditions before committing to the route.
- LeClaire’s riverfront and some parking areas can close during high water. Check city alerts and never go around a barricade.
- Detailed accessibility and large-vehicle parking information was not published for every stop, so call ahead when those details determine whether the outing works.
Make it your own
If rain, flooding, heat, or cold makes the riverfront unpleasant, spend that extra time inside the Buffalo Bill Museum instead. If the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum is closed on a winter Monday or Tuesday, shift this outing to Wednesday through Sunday; the anchor experience is worth planning around rather than replacing with a quick commercial stop.
