A Family Day in Decorah: Trout, Pizza, a Waterfall, and Ice Cream
Decorah makes a gentle family day because the best stops are close together and nicely varied. This route is built for families and multigenerational groups who want trout to feed, a downtown lunch, a short waterfall walk, and a final ice cream stop.

Start with trout and a spring
Begin at the Chuck Gipp Decorah Fish Hatchery, where trout rush the surface for food. The hatchery says visitors can buy feed from dispensers, so bring quarters and let kids take turns. The site is open to the public from sunrise to sunset, so a late morning visit gives you flexibility.
Plan for 60 to 90 minutes. That is enough time to watch the raceways, step over to Siewers Spring, and decide whether your group wants a short walk on part of the Trout Run Trail. Fishing is allowed in Siewers Spring and nearby Trout Run, not in the raceways. If fishing is part of your plan, check Iowa DNR license and trout permit rules first.
Make lunch easy at Mabe's Pizza
From the hatchery, drive into downtown Decorah for lunch at Mabe's Pizza on East Water Street. Mabe's works well here because it is casual, central, and part of the town's story. The restaurant traces its start to Mabel's Lunchroom in 1953 and says the business moved into its current downtown building in 1978.
For families, the bigger win is practical: Mabe's lists dine-in, takeout, and delivery, with daily hours that start at 11 a.m. The menu is broad enough for mixed-age groups, and pizza is a low-drama lunch before an outdoor stop. Give yourself about an hour.
Take the short waterfall walk
After lunch, drive a few minutes to Dunning's Spring Park. Visit Decorah recommends parking in the gravel area just south of the entrance, then walking to the waterfall. This stop makes the day feel more like a mini adventure than a lunch trip.
Keep your plan focused: waterfall, stone bridge, a look toward the spring source, and a few photos. More trails connect toward Ice Cave Road, but Visit Decorah describes some of that system as complex and technical, with not all trails marked on printed maps. Save the steeper exploring for another visit unless everyone has sturdy shoes, energy, and a clear route.
Finish with ice cream
End at Sugar Bowl at The Landing on College Drive. Sugar Bowl's site lists the Landing location as open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., while its Water Street location is marked seasonal and closed for the season on the current location page. That makes The Landing the cleaner choice for this route.
This stop gives the day a relaxed landing: no big activity, no long drive, just a treat and a chance to talk through everyone's favorite part.
Map and driving order
Use this order to avoid backtracking: Chuck Gipp Decorah Fish Hatchery, Mabe's Pizza, Dunning's Spring Park, Sugar Bowl at The Landing. The drives are short, but add time for parking downtown and gathering everyone after each stop.
Before you go
- Bring quarters for the fish-feed dispensers at the hatchery.
- Check current hours the morning of your trip, especially Sugar Bowl's active location and any weather-related park notes.
- Wear shoes with decent grip for Dunning's Spring. The main waterfall visit is short, but the optional trails can be steep.
- If you plan to fish, review Iowa DNR fishing license and trout permit requirements first.
- During Nordic Fest, holiday weekends, or busy summer Saturdays, expect more traffic and fuller parking areas in Decorah.
Make it your own
If rain, mud, or tired legs make the waterfall less appealing, swap in Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum. It is indoors, downtown, and open longer hours in the May-through-October season, with paid admission for adults and ages 7 to 18. It is strongest for curious older kids, teens, and adults, and it keeps the Decorah flavor of the day intact.
